RangeTrader Support

This is the support page for RangeTrader. Here you will find links to captured video showing you how to download and install RangeTrader. If you are computer 'savvy' then you may want to refer to the manual Which you should already have.

Also there is now a RangeTrader forum which can be found at the following URL :-

http://www.rangetraderforum.com

This forum is run by RangeTrader users themselves, and is open to anyone. It is not moderated by FellowTraders, or RangeTrader's Author Peter Parsons (although he does participate) Both support for newbies, as well as curency settings can also be found here.

Support Videos

The video files have been captured using Camtasia by our support Guy. They are quite large at around 5 MegaBytes each so please be patient while they load.

The first video covers how to download the files to your desktop :-

Click here to see 'Downloading RangeTrader'

The second video covers how to copy the RangeTrader.ex4 file into the correct folder so that MetaTrader can use it :-

Click here to see installing RangeFinder

This next video shows how to load and use MetaTrader's Strategy Tester to back-test RangeTrader.

The User manual for RangeTrader as an HTML page

I have also posted the RangeTrader user manual here as an HTML page, simply becuase some users have difficulty with the Acrobat document.

RangeTrader EA User manual Page (3.92)

Common issues :-

Q: " When I click on the RangeTrader.ex4 file, I get a message the file is corrupt" or not supported, what is wrong?

A: You are trying to load the Ex4 file directly. It is not a program, it is a MetaTrader 4 EA file. This means that you need to install metatrader 4 from a supporting broker, and then you need to copy the RangeTrader.ex4 file into your MetaTrader experts folder on your local hard drive and attach it to a chart within MetaTrader. Please read the user manual for a more complete description of what to do. The manual is available as an acrobat file here :-

RangeTrader user manual (right click and save)

Q : " I have installed RangeTrader and I do not see a smiley face next to RangeTrader on the chart, what is wrong? "

A: You need to read the manual on page from approximately 40 onwards.

In essence, you ned to enter RangeTraders properties by left clicking the chart where RangeTrader is installed, and hitting the F7 key.

You then need to make sur that you have allowed live trading in the common tab, as well as checked the 'Allow DLL imports' box, You also need to uncheck the 'Confirm DLL function calls' checkbox too.

Once this is done, simply click OK and a smiley face should appear.

Q: " I have RangeTrader installed, and a smiley face, but there is no price grid appearing. What is wrong? "

A: You have not checked the 'Allow DLL Imports' checkbox as directed above

Or you are not receiving fresh data.

Check the Experts 'Tab' of MetaTrader's Terminal window (explained in the manual on page 69 of the user manual available above) for errors.

You need to close and reload MetaTrader before RangeTrader trades properly (at least once). You also need live data arriving to screen before RangeTrader opens it's price grid. Make sure you are in Trading hours for the currency pair you are Trading.

A: You have the wrong account type selected

Most demo accounts are 'Standard' with leverage of 100:1 However if you run standard settings on a mini account (leverage 200:1) you will not get a trading grid. If you check the Experts 'tab' of MT4's terminal window, you will see error 131, ,eaning unsupported lotsize. Try changing your account type.

Also, RangeTrader requires good fresh data.

It turns out that there are several MetaTrader brokers out there that have swamped their demo server with new accounts (probably from US ... !).

What this means is that the data rate is not what it should be. So rather than seeing every tick, your demo account might only see one every 20 seconds or so.

RangeTrader needs to see a tick of fresh data for every change it wants to make. So to open up a price grid it needs up to 300 ticks of fresh data.

If you you are not seeing enough live data in a reasonable length of time to trigger the changes, it will appear as if nothing is happening.

To prove this you need to load MetaTrader, load say a 1 hour chart, and then leave the machine alone for 20 minutes os so. Make a note of the current price, and watch it change. Don't change time bars, because this re-initializes RangeTrader, and will halt where ever it was at before the chart time frame change.

Give it time .....

Using MetaTrader 4 Strategy Tester

RangeTrader-Phase-Two-3.87 Now supports back-testing using MT4's Strategy Tester. It will only test history from 1st January 2008 onwards accurately because of the number of Daily trading ranges needed to be downloaded from Fellow Traders servers.

If you try to test earlier than this, you may see trades occuring, and even get an update to the trade Graph, but it will NOT be accurate. The system will be using the wrong trading ranges.

What back-testing will show you is that underfudning an account can lead to losses.

Try running a back-test using thew default settings against an account with a starting balance of $50k, and then re-run the back-test using the same settings using a starting balance of $10k. Note the difference? This is because there is more granularity of lotsize available with a $50k accout than there is with a $10k account. Money management makes a hge difference to how an account performs. The smaller the account size, the worse this effect gets.

Different MT4 broker installation issues

I have now looked at approximately 7 different Brokers MetaTrader installations and have found that some of them are completely bespoke in terms of which folder you store the expert Advisor code in.... !

InterbankFX installation

I have installed a demo account from InterbankFX, and the following information may help :-

1:- Interbank have called their bespoke version of MetaTrader 4, Interbank FX Trader 4

2:- InterbankFX's metaTrader 4 installs under a folder called

"Interbank FX Trader 4" on local drive c:

3:- There is an 'experts' folder under this. This is where you copy 'RangeTrader-.ex4' file.

If you have trouble finding the 'Expert' folder , then please contact your broker to find exactly where to copy the RangeTrader-D.ex4 file.
